Medial epicondylitis (Golfers elbow) and Lateral epicondylitis (Tennis elbow) are 2 common conditions treated here at Prima. In fact at the time of writing this blog we have 4 clients currently suffering from the latter.

Firstly, these 2 conditions are not typically seen in golfers or tennis players – in fact, with 16 years of trading we have never seen a tennis player suffering from tennis elbow or likewise with the golfing community and Medial epicondylitis.

Lateral Epicondylitis

Let’s first look at Lateral Epicondylitis which is perhaps more common. Epicondylitis is an inflammatory condition (itis) around the epicondyle insertion point ( the boney prominence on the lateral side of elbow) Symptoms include pain when turning the arm/wrist, tenderness to touch and in some cases visible sign of redness and/or swelling. Activities which commonly cause LE are repetitive actions such as typing, cleaning windows or gardening activities. Recovery from tennis elbow can take several weeks and rehabilitation will consist of physiotherapy modalities such as heat treatment, stretching and strengthening techniques.

Medial Epicondylitis

Medial Epicondylitis is far less common and discomfort is felt around the medial side of the elbow (inside). Activities causing this condition are more complicated but here are some of the causes we have seen in the clinic.

    • Sleeping on the arm causing inflammation
    • Direct trauma to the injury site
    • Repetitive throwing
    • Folding laundry in a work situation
    • Yoga poses which consist of holding body weight for a period of time

Again rehabilitation advice is similar to Lateral epicondylitis but recovery time is likely to be more extensive. If you are suffering from either of these conditions, please contact us at info@primaclinic.co.uk for a consultation.
