We have many runners coming to us complaining of a condition called ‘Shin splints’. What are Shin splints and how do we treat them?

Shin splints is an umbrella term for anterior shin pain, this shin pain can be usually diagnosed into three different injuries:

The first and the least common is a fracture, this is usually but not always caused by a sudden trauma or impact on the shin bone. There are a few tests that we can perform to diagnose that a fracture site is present but ultimately an X-Ray is required to confirm such cases.

Another form of Shin splints is Periostitis this is when inflammation occurs in a group of muscles called the peroneals, this muscle group can be found on the outside of the shin and can become tight due to poor running form, poor footwear, a change in terrain or an increase in mileage. It can be treated using physiotherapy techniques including deep tissue massage.

The third and most common is anterior compartment syndrome, which is when constant vibrations are sent through the lower leg thus causing small micotears in the tissue and can often be quite painful when performing simple tasks such as walking. Again, many issues can cause these tears including changes in running programs.
